The plot is told through the adventures of a Syrian brown bear who is orphaned and abandoned then adopted by Polish soldiers who treat him as family. It helped the reader fall in love with the soldiers and especially Voytek. What I loved most were the adorable sketches throughout the book. Some prompts I could use while reading this book with children are that you can discuss how war works and topics like deployment, or how they may have used animals in WWII.ĭ. Some thoughts I had were how its a great way to tell children a story of war to incorporate this fun and interesting story of a bear in war. However, he is a great help on our trips he is also a great companion and we have a lot of great stories with him and some bad. Our dog Hurley helps us find animals, and is great for protection as well. Some personal connections I have are that when my family goes hunting we take our dog with us. The story explains how the bear causes great times with the soldiers and bad times with them as well. The story may be a story of war during World War II but it focuses on the friendship that this bear creates with the soldiers and even a monkey. I thought the story may have been more focused on fiction but the story includes a lot of history. Before reading the novel the cover gave me some insight that it has something to do with war and a bear but I did not know that the story would be so realistic.
